Iszvan III died unexpectedly at the age of 48, reportedly from falling off a horse and breaking his neck. While many suspected foul play, and even a possible assassination, nothing was proven about the cause of his death except that he broke his neck and died immediately.

He had officially made his eldest son Jidrik the heir to the imperial throne, however, Iszvan's brother Hanzi had always been ambitious, and coveted the throne for himself. A few days before Jidrik's coronation, Hanzi proclaimed himself Emperor in the Upper Navrak with the support of over half the legions, starting the Third Imperial Succession Crisis.
