The radical group opposed merger as they felt put down by the federal government of Malaysia and planned to sabotage PAP by asking voters to support opposite candidates. Tungku, fearing that the radical group will take forceful action, agreed to the proposed merger in a speech.
Key points of the proposed merger:
-SG would have control over education, labour matters, and civil service
-SG could have its own elections and choose its own state of government but could only vote in its own elections and could not participate in others.
-SG citizens would be called Federal Nationals
-Singapore would have its own head of state
-Federal government stationed in KL would oversee SG's defence, internal security, and dealings with foreign governments
-SG would collect its own revenue and pay KL on an agreed upon sum to cover costs of federal services.
