The first collapsible paint tube was invented and patented in 1841 by American artist John Goffe Rand. His tin tube invention allowed artists to store paints in a portable and sealed container. Revolutionizing the ability to paint outdoors and a major factor in the rise of Impressionism. Painters could finally exit the studio, ergo the transition to en plein air painting. By painting outdoors, Impressionist artists like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir could capture the fleeting effects of natural light and atmosphere.
