After the end of the Japanese Empire, the United Nations decided to divide the job of organizing Korea between the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union.

The Soviets for their part began to manage the northern half of the peninsular above the 38th parallel, and the UK managed the south. Eventually however, two separate governments were established, with a more Soviet-style socialist republic in North Korea, and a Western-style government in South Korea.

In the August and September of 1948 these two nations were officially granted independence under the rule of their own leaders.
