Seeking to expand its influence, ISI merges with another jihadist militant group and changes to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). The term 'al-Sham' translates to "the Levant" or "Syria" to properly show the group's expansion as it begins to intervene with the Syrian Civil War.

The group will operate under Iraqi militant Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
