AQI along with other Sunni jihadist organizations formed the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), intending to continue the fight against US-led forces in Iraq and expel them under a united front.

Additionally, ISI expects to take control of Iraq and declare itself the "caliphate," or ruling Islamic institution.
