8 set 1850 ano - Compromise of 1850

Descrição:

The Compromise of 1850 was a series of 5 laws passed that was passed by Congress under President Fillmore. It aimed to decrease tensions between the North and South by admitting New Mexico and Utah as territories with no restrictions against slavery, meaning that popular sovereignty would decide whether slavery should exist in the states. It also banned the slave trade, but not slavery itself in the District of Columbia, made California a free state, gave Texas $10 million to retreat from New Mexico territory, and a stricter Fugitive Slave Act was passed. These compromises all contributed to the buildup leading to the Civil War, because although it somewhat diffused the tensions between the North and South, many people were still against it, because it was too moderate and didn’t lean enough towards either side. Many criticised it for being disgraceful, a premature solution, and many Southerners believed that the North wanted to fully abolish slavery.
