Ho Chi Minh, head of the communist nationalist movement the Viet Minh, takes advantage of the Japanese coup d’état in Indochina and seizes power in the French colony. On 2 September 1945, on behalf of the provisional government, he announces the country’s independence and officially proclaims the creation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV).
