After holding off a series of attempts by the British to annex the country to protect its Indian Empire from Russia, Afghanistan declares its independence at the end of the Third Anglo-Afghan War with the signing of the Treaty of Rawalpindi.

The US recognizes Afghanistan's independence within the following few years.
