Two years after france conquors Holland.
Dutch Jewish Community: 50 000
The Ashkenazi community in Amsterdam is governed by parnasim (the 7 wealthiest taxpayers) who were in opposition to Jewish intellectuals infused with the ideas of french revolution. These intellectuals (maskilim) banded together with some non-Jews to form a pro-french patriotic society called Felix Libertate. They wanted to help the Jewish majority of poor people.
Its Jewish members failed in instituting change from within, and so some of them created a rival community: Adath Yeshurun who had its own synagogue, rabbi, kosher meat slaughtering place, cemetery etc.
The Adath Yeshurun was accusing the other group of stealing from the poor, prohibited inter-marriages with them and accused them from further things. They spread universal messianic hope, extended prayers for non-Jews. Lead by a Swedish convert, Izak Graanboom. Synagogal reforms.
IN 1808 Louis Bonaparte reunited the two communities in a single consistory system for all Holland.
