After Lenin's untimely death, Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin fought for control and power. Stalin managed to fill the party with people loyal to him, then denounced and expelled Trotsky in 1927. Two years later, he forced him to flee the country, leaving him the absolute leader of the party.
