While up to this point to be fair the war had been a stalemate, Lincoln was losing support quickly in the North, and he needed something to boost morale, So after the Battle of Antietam, Abraham Lincoln decided on January 1, 1863, to Declare The Emancipation Proclamation, Which stated that all enslaved people in the Confederate states were to be free. This brought joy to the African American population of the North and started their entry into the Union army. Where they become vital to winning the war.
