Following Lenin's stroke In 1922 Vladimir Lenin suffered a stroke intense competition to lead the Communist Party followed. The two frontrunners of this competition were Stalin and Trotsky. Stalin’s climb to power took place between the years 1922 and 1927 and he finally took complete control of the Communist Party in 1928 due to his ability to move his supporters into positions of power within the party.
