Romanticism (jan 1, 1800 – jan 1, 1850)
Description:
Romanticism was characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism as well as glorification of all the past and nature, preferring the medieval rather than the classical. It was partly a reaction to the Industrial Revolution, the aristocratic social and political norms of the Age of Enlightenment, and the scientific rationalization of nature—all components of modernity. De Romantiek kan zowel als een onderdeel van & als een tegenstroming v/d Verlichting gezien worden:
1. Onderdeel van: zonder bewustzijn van zichzelf zouden mensen zich ook niet realiseren dat ze gevoel hebben.
2. Tegenstroming: bij de Verlichting draait alles om de ratio, bij de romantiek om het gevoel, beiden staan tegenover elkaar.
Important artists: Delacroix, Friedrich en Constable. Their paintings are included:
1. Caspar David Friedrich, 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog' (1818).
2. John Constable, 'The Hay Wain' (1821, National Gallery London). --> John Constable is primarily know for his landscape paintings of the era surrounding his home.
3. Eugène Delacroix, The Death of Sardanapalus (1827).
