Description:

-Typhus is a bacteria and has 4 forms
-Rocky mt. spotted fever spread by ticks
-Scrub spreads by harvest mites
-Endemic spread by fleas
-Epidemic spread by lice on humans
-Symptoms include fever, chills, aches, rash and fog of the brain leading to confusion, seizures and coma
-Many outbreaks over history
-Plague of Athens in 430-426bce
-1/3 of population dies
-3 different outbreaks in Athens
-Goal fever, 1759 1/4 of prisoners died
-Napoleons retreat from Moscow in 1812, 400000 men died in the retreat most from typhus
-Ireland and the year without summer, in 1816-1819 100000 irish died. Mainly due to causes from a volcano going off and keeping the temperature cold
-North American typhus Epidemic in 1847, thousands of Irish immigrants die in quarantine station
-New York 1892, Russian jews fled to America and were exposed to horrible living conditions
-Mainly a social quarantine
-Typhus fever epidemic 1892, 1200 people quarantined
-WW1, Eastern front 10-40% fatality rate and 150000 die in Siberia alone
-Bath riots in 1917 by Mexicans refusing to be disinfected with flammable chemicals and forced to get naked for inspections
