Great Leap Forward (jul 1, 1958 – jul 1, 1962)
Description:
Tried to force China’s transition from an agrarian society to a utopian socialist economy through rapid collectivization and industrialization. Farmers were forced to stay at “struggle session” meetings until they volunteered to give up their land. The Great Leap Forward and its campaigns were an unmitigated disaster. Agricultural workers who were relocated to cities for industrial work had no such training or knowledge for factory work, and factories had still not yet developed industrial capital machinery. The Great Leap Forward eventually led to a huge loss of workers and combined with the laws passed by the CCP which mandated unproven agricultural practices, caused the Chinese Famine.
