Meiji Restoration (Japanese Industrialization) (jan 1, 1868 – dec 31, 1878)

Description:

The Tokugawa Shogunate ruled Japan from 1600 to 1868. The Tokugawa Shogunate didn't like foreigners therefore no one would trade with Japan. When American Commodore Matthew Perry sailed into the Tokyo Harbor with military ships with the goal to end Japan's Isolation and open ports to trade with other countries. This showed that the Tokugawa Shogunate was weak. One day a middle ranked samurai overthrew the government and set out to modernize and industrialize Japan. When Japan industrialized their transportation and communication methods expanded, they created a new system of government, and their economy (which was previously agriculturally based) was now more factory based (especially in silk).
