Meiji Restoration (Japanese Industrialization) (jan 1, 1868 – dec 31, 1878)
Description:
The Meiji Restoration lasted from 1868-1878 and was the period of time where Japan industrialized. Mathew Perry ended the Tokogawa Shogunate period of Japan, the period before this one, by landing in Tokyo Harbor and demanding that Japan start trade with western nations. This sparked Japan industrializing to catch up with other nations, and having influence from these nations. Japan had more representation in the government that the people voted fro, began to have an army and navy, with training help from France, and followed trends from western nations. Also, they followed the trend of using coal and steam as an energy source, and soon factories and steam engines popped up around japan as well.
