The Iran Iraq war was from 1980 to 1988.
The dispute between the two countries because of territorial and political problems. The president of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, wanted the banks of Shatt al'- Arab.
In September 1980, Iraq took Iran by surprised by its army. The army took the city of Khorramshahr but not the oil refining centre. Both countries also attacked each others oil shipping in the Persian Gulf which caused concern to the US and other W. European countries. As a result, oil exporting for both countries was severely reduced.
In 1990, Iraq was preoccupied with the invasion of Kuwait and relations between the two countries were restored.
