South Carolina Secedes - December 20, 1860 (dec 20, 1860 – apr 30, 1861)
Description:
During the early 1800s, the northern states of America had abolished and made slavery illegal. Since the north moved on to an industrialized economy, they did not need slaves to work for them. Many northerners hired cheap European workers to do the jobs of the slaves. However, the south still farmed which required labor-intensive tasks. The south believed that it was necessary to have slaves to maintain their plantations. However, many northern states believed otherwise, they began disagreeing with the southern states and the south became angry. Due to this argument, William H. Gist, the state governor of South Carolina told other southern states that if Abraham Lincoln won the election, they would secede from the Union.
