Claudio Monteverdi (jan 1, 1567 – jan 1, 1643)
Description:
Monteverdi was a composer of great renown from the end of the 16th century, and served as a bridge between the Renaissance and Baroque periods of music (Much like Bach did between the Baroque and Classical).
Among his most famous works include his nine books of madrigals and his operas, which were an expansion on opera's earlier form. In fact, Monteverdi is known as the "first great composer of opera", and his works are still performed today.
He wrote operas for Venice and Mantua, and travelled to the Italian court of Ferrera, where he composed for the all-female group, the "Concerto delle donne".
