The 'Great Pyramid of Khufu', better known as the Great Pyramid of Giza, is begun by Khufu (Freeman, Pg 23); it is the first and largest of the pyramids of Giza ("); it is believed that large ramps were the means of transporting building materials (Freeman, Pg 24), as cranes were not invented until the Roman era; ground levelled specially to produce suitable foundation ("); in combination with the sheer scale of the monument, indicates extensive manpower was utilised (Freeman estimates approx 100,000 men required), but also that these people were technically skilled (Freeman, Pg 23); workers were contracted craftsmen rather than slave labourers (Freeman, Pg 24); pyramid itself only constitutes part of funerary complex, originally having an approx. 600m covered causeway leading up to the entrance of the pyramid and a mortuary (where the final ritual purification of the king's body would occur) on the eastern side of the compound, along the wall (")
