The Compromise of 1850 (jan 29, 1850 – sep 30, 1850)
Description:
Senator Clay proposed that California be free in the north but have no restrictions in the south, but Calhoun believed that if it were that way the north would demand that the south be free. At first, Congress didn't pass Clay's bill because of president Taylor. The president soon died and Millard Filmore took his spot, who agreed to the bill. By fall Congress passed the bill, and Filmore had put it into law.
