Olympe de Gouges (jan 16, 1748 – nov 3, 1793)

Description:

A prominent French writer and social activist in the late 18th century, known for her strong advocacy for women's rights and her abolitionist views. She is best known for her Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen (1791), a direct response to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. This document championed equal rights for women, challenging the prevailing societal norms that relegated women to a subordinate status. She was also an outspoken critic of slavery and a vocal supporter of the Girondin faction during the French Revolution. Ultimately, her political views led to her execution by the guillotine in 1793.
