Thomas Hobbes (apr 5, 1588 – dec 4, 1679)
Description:
An English philosopher, best known for his political philosophy, especially his work "Leviathan" (1651). He's considered a founding father of modern political philosophy, arguing that humans are naturally self-interested and that a strong sovereign power is necessary to maintain order and prevent a "state of nature" where life would be "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short".
