Description:
Ancient province of France, located in the southwestern part of the country, north of the Pyrenees Mts.. One of the richest French- speaking regions, control over Aquitaine caused conflict between the French and English monarchies for much of the Middle Ages. OR a historical region in southwestern France, saw significant shifts in control during the Middle Ages. Initially a duchy, it passed to the English crown in 1152 when Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henry II of England. Aquitaine remained under English control until 1453, when it was annexed by France at the end of the Hundred Years' War. Before this, it was part of the Roman province of Aquitania and later became a Visigothic province
