The first queen to rule England in her own right, serving from 1553 to 1558. She is infamous for her brutal persecution of Protestants, which earned her the nickname "Bloody Mary". Mary was a devout Roman Catholic and sought to restore Catholicism in England, reversing the religious changes enacted by her father, Henry VIII.
