The Development of Sparta (jan 1, 650 BC – jan 1, 371 BC)
Description:
Sparta was a powerful military state governed by two kings and a council of elders, who made important decisions and helped lead the city-state. To maintain order and control, Sparta created a rigid social structure that carefully organized its citizens into specific roles. The people Sparta conquered were made slaves, known as helots, who were forced to farm and provide food for the Spartan state. This system allowed Spartan citizens to focus entirely on military training and defense, as the helots handled much of the daily labor.
Spartan society was centered around military strength, discipline, and aggressiveness. From a young age, Spartan boys were trained to become soldiers, while girls were also taught to be strong and loyal to the state. Unlike other Greek city-states, Spartans did not value individual or artistic expression. Personal freedom, creativity, and luxury were considered distractions from military service and loyalty to Sparta. The focus on military preparation and obedience shaped every part of Spartan life.
