Revolutionary War (jan 2, 1775 – jan 1, 1783)

Description:

TORIES
- Treated awfully by Patriots
- Deprived of rights, property taken, exiled, jailed, some executed after the war

PATRIOTS
- Goal: don't lose, maintain popular support for war, keep army together
- Pros: have popular support, fighting at home, fighting for a cause, soldiers physically stronger
- Cons: no experienced officer corps, army not disciplined, LACK SUPPORT OF STRONG GOVT.

BRITISH
- Goal: win decisively and quickly
- Pros: experienced officers, well-disciplined army, strong navy, strong govt., industrialized
- Cons: spread thin, many enemies (France, Spain, Holland), little financial support (after 1763), opposition at home, fighting 3000 miles away

BLACK AMERICANS
- Misinterpretation of British court decision meant many slave owners thought that British were going to take away slaves --> strong Patriot South
- Lord Dunmore (governor of VA) offers freedom to slaves who fight for the British (promise isn't kept)
- T. Jefferson tried abolishing slavery in Dec. of Ind. but the motion was nixed by Southerners
- Eventually, colonists allow Black Americans to fight in war (about 5,000 black troops)
- Far more fight on British side (but after the war are often sold to the British W. Indies as slaves, or die of smallpox)

NATIVE AMERICANS
- Most tribes favor British, but both British and Americans want neutrality
- Cherokees fight with British and are defeated by Colonists
- Iroquois Confederacy splits over alliances
