Description:
- Fur trade causes tension/competition between Iroquois (Dutch ally) and Huron (French ally)
- Iroquois launch genocidal attacks on Hurons in "mourning wars" and for fur trade (1640s)
- Iroquois armed w/ better Dutch weapons

- Hurons lose unity following smallpox
outbreak that spared only Jesuit priests (seen
as act of CHRISTIAN god, conflict over
conversion)
- By 1650, all Huron villages have been destroyed or abandoned --> French step in to fight Iroquois
- Iroquois start losing, population decimated --> sign peace treaty w/ French (their survival depended on it)
