Battle of Iwo Jima (feb 19, 1945 – mar 26, 1945)
On February of 1945 American marines landed on the small island of Iwo Jima, just 750 miles away from Tokyo. US commanders though the island could be captured in 4 days, but did not know that the Japanese had an advanced defense system under the black sand beaches that were all defensive tunnels and such. Marines had to go tunnel by tunnel throwing explosives to flush the Japanese strongholds out. The Island fell at the end of March. 5,885 Marines were killed and 23,573 Marines were injured in the battle, this made it the costliest battle of the Marines in the war. Over 23, 000 Japanese fought or had committed suicide during the battle, and only 220 had surrendered.
