Sam Steele and the Klondike Gold Rush (Ava) (aug 18, 1896 – jan 1, 1899)

Description:

It was in August 1896 that gold was discovered in a tributary of the Klondike River in Canada’s Yukon Territory. This was the beginning of the Klondike gold rush. News of the discovery traveled quickly in North America and miners started flooding to the Klondike to find their fortune. There were so many people they were referred to as Stampeders. Sam Steele was a Canadian man who was born in Purbrook, Ontario in 1849. He first joined a military group when he was only 16 years old. He was involved in a lot of different missions leading up to his assignment in the Yukon in 1898. As a member of the North West Mounted Police, Sam was part of a team to enforce frontier justice. In 1898 he set up border posts to stop criminal activities in particular, a criminal named Soapy Smith. With a Mounted Police force of only 13 people, Sam helped bring justice to Dawson City which was in chaos. In 1899 Sam’s assignment in the Klondike ended and he went on to many other famous missions.
