Big Bear and Treaty No.6 (dec 8, 1882 – jan 17, 1888)

Description:

Big Bear (Mistahi Maskwa) is the chief/headman of the Cree.He signed treaty no.6 at Saskatchewan in 1882.He resisted from signing it for 4 years since he thought that he would get tricked by the government.Food supplies were running low for his people and he did not want his people to face starvation so his only choice was to sign it.The government did not give food to Cree on the first winter after Big Bear signed the treaty no.6. Chief Wandering Spirit and Big Bear's son killed 9 white residents at Frog lake.Big Bear got arrested since he was chief.He wanted to talk about it peacefully but it did not work and he went to jail at the age of 60.He was supposed to stay in jail for 3 years but due to his health conditions he was released when he was 62 and soon after that he died.Big Bear's legacy is still alive because he fought in peace with the government so his people could have rights.
