Foreigners hired to teach (jan 1, 1871 – jun 3, 1899)

Description:

The Japanese practice of hiring so-called oyatoi gaikokujin ("hired foreigners") was a big boost to its industrialization and allowed the Japanese to learn firsthand from already-experienced people, which accomplished a similar goal to the industrial exhibitions. Lord Kelvin of Scotland was one of the most important figures in this process, as he sent many of his prodigies to teach and do research. Dyer was the first among these, but there was also the famous pair of Ayrton and Perry, who published Japan's first-ever physics report in 1877 and made several breakthroughs in seismology. Kelvin also took in many of the Japanese students who were sent overseas, a practice which began at the same time as oyatoi gaikokujin. Japanese students were also sent to schools in America and Britain like MIT and Oxford.
