Iwakura Mission (jan 1, 1871 – dec 31, 1871)
Description:
The Iwakura Mission was a mission of Japanese scientists to the United States and other Western countries with the objective of understanding their societies and technology. The Iwakura Mission brought back many technological ideas and several hired educators from the West, and was the government's first foray into the West. One of these educators was Lord Kelvin's apprentice Henry Dyer, who directed the Imperial College of Engineering.
