Treaty of Nanking after British took Canton (after Chinese issued 1839 edict) (jan 1, 1842 – jan 1, 1842)
Description:
Defeated Chinese were forced to sign the treaty of Nanking (1842), giving Hong Kong to the British, opening 5 new ports to foreign trade, and paying a hefty indemnity. OPIUM TRADE NOT DEALT WITH. Opium still illegal, but iffy because Chinese authorities didn't know how to deal w/ the trade.
