Great Plague of London (jan 1, 1665 – jan 1, 1666)

Description:

Where: England

Disease: Bubonic Plague

Cause: Yerinsia pestis bacteria

Transmission: After the Black Death, the Plague was never eliminated from London completely. This epidemic was a severe flare-up.

Symptoms:
-Swollen lymph nodes (buboes)
-Can spread to bloodstream and lungs to cause other forms of plague
-If bloodstream is infected, death often comes on the same day symptoms first appear
-If lungs become infected, death can come in as little as one day

Death toll: Estimated 100,000

End: Death toll gradually slowed. There were next to no deaths in the summer of 1666, and the epidemic was considered to be over.
