Great Plague of Milan (jan 1, 1629 – jan 1, 1631)
Description:
Where: Italy
Disease: Bubonic Plague
Cause: Yerinsia pestis bacteria
Transmission: German and French soldiers carried it into Italy as a result of the 30 Years' War. Venetians carried it further north into the country when they retreated.
Symptoms:
-Swollen lymph nodes (buboes)
-Can spread to bloodstream and lungs to cause other forms of plague
-If bloodstream is infected, death often comes on the same day symptoms first appear
-If lungs become infected, death can come in as little as one day
Death toll: Around 1,000,000 (25% of Italy)
