SARS (jan 1, 2002 – jan 1, 2003)
Description:
SARS, which stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome, caused by coronavirus. The outbreak, which originated in Asia, can be transmitted through coughing or sneezing. The disease quickly spread North America, South America, Europe, and Asia before being contained. Humans who have contracted the virus show symptoms such as a high fever, a headache, body aches, a cough, and pneumonia. Over 8,000 people contracted the virus, but only 774 people died. It was SARS, which has no cure, that popularized the surgical mask as a way to avoid the disease.
