Claiborne as governor of the Territory of Orleans (jan 3, 1804 – oct 6, 1804)
Description:
Claiborne was governor of New Orleans because Thomas Jefferson appointed him. Thomas Jefferson appointed him for many reasons, including that he was in a rush for a new leader. Claiborne was the governor of the Mississippi territory in 1803 and he supported Jefferson in his presidential election in 1804. Many people did not agree with this because he spoke Spanish, not French. Thomas Jefferson wanted Claiborne to take changes on Louisiana slowly because it was still a colony. Claiborne was appointed the territorial governor.
