Second Battle of Petersburg (Siege on Petersburg) (jun 15, 1864 – jun 18, 1864)

Description:

June 15-18, 1864: General Ulysses S. Grant knew that Petersburg was the key to the capture of Richmond. He knew Robert E. Lee would have to defend it. On June 15, the Union forced the Confederacy to go back to Harrison Creek. On June 16, the Second Corps conquered another part of Confederate lines. On the 17, the Ninth Corps conquered more ground. At first it looked like Grant would win, but when Lee sent in reinforcements from different elements of the Army of Northern Virginia, and all the Corps engaged in the battle began to attack, the Union suffered from heavy casualties. The battle was a Confederate win, and it was very bad for the Union because their opportunity to capture Petersburg to try to get to the Confederate capital at Richmond was over.
