Description:
Semi-secret organization of black and white volunteers, mostly abolitionists and free-soilers in the free areas of the Ohio Valley -> Vast network to assist slaves escaping from the South find refuge and safe haven, mostly in Canada.
Slave escorted through a series of safe houses and locations -> estimated 100,000 slaves who escaped the South between 1810 and 1850.
In the meantime -> harsh reaction of planters and southern authorities.
Extreme violence toward slaves and relatiation after revolts.
