One great experience: Mrs. Harris as my AP Government teacher. She made me realize the importance of taking my civic duties seriously and the privilege you have if you say you don’t care about politics. She is the only teacher from high school I continue to have contact with. Looking back, that class and her as a teacher really shaped me and the beliefs about the world I hold true today. My husband and I are very politically active, and being up-to-date on current events is extremely important to me. My political and social views are a huge reason I want to be a teacher, and why I want to help make my community a better place, AND why I want to help my students see that change starts with them at any age, and there are ways they can be involved in making their community a better place. I truly think I owe these beliefs and career choice in huge part to Mrs. Harris.
Negative Experience: My manager at my job made me feel uncomfortable on several levels. My parents went to human resources with me, and then I felt retaliated against. I would cry about going to work even though I barely worked even part-time. However, in the classroom I want to teach students how to speak up and defend themselves against people like this, who they will inevitably encounter. I don’t feel like I had a voice until I entered my 20s, and I want to teach students how to advocate for themselves much earlier than this.
