Nullification Crisis (may 19, 1828 – mar 15, 1833)

Description:

A high protective tariff (for tax) was signed into the law by the U.S. government South Carolinians' - specifically John C. Calhoun disagreed with the high tariffs and felt that they targeted the South unfairly. South Carolina nullified the federal law, calling it unconstitutional until a "force bill" was threatened which would bring the national army into the state to make sure the law was followed. A compromise took place. South Carolina would pay the tax if the U.S. government lowered the tax. The U.S. Government would not send troops if South Carolina agreed to pay this lower tax.
