Nullification Crisis (may 19, 1828 – mar 15, 1833)
Description:
A high protective tariff (or tax) was into law by the U.S government. South Carolinians - specifically John. C. Calhoun strongly disagreed with the high tariff and felt that they targeted South Carolina unfairly. South Carolina nullified the federal law calling it unconstitunal until a force bill was threatended which would bring the national army into the state to make sure the laws was followed. A compromise took place. South Carolina would pay the tax if the U.S government lowered the tax. The U.S government would not send troops is South Carolina agreed to pay this lower tax.
