Bosnian Genocide (apr 6, 1992 – dec 14, 1995)

Description:

After Tito’s death, many groups lost economic integration, disrupting the peace treaty. As pieces of Yugoslavia broke away to become independent nations, fear rose among the Serbs. If Yugoslavia keeps losing land, what would they be left with? When Slobodan Milosevic came to power in 1987, he formulated a plan to ethnically cleanse Bosnia and the other six nations. This way, the nation would be made up entirely of Serbs only, and citizens would no longer desire to break away. Leaders and the intelligent were decapitated, while Muslim men of “fighting age” were executed. Women, children, and old men were moved to concentration camps or national borders. Victims also suffered from massacres and gang rape. Croatians and Bosnians eventually launched Operation Storm to drive Serbs out of the northwest corner of Bosnia. The Serbs then agreed to a peace agreement, known as the Dayton Accords, and 60,000 NATO troops were stationed, ending the genocide. In the end, an estimated 100,000 non-Serbs had been murdered.
