Marco Polo (jan 1, 1254 – jan 1, 1324)
Description:
Marco Polo was an Italian merchant who made voyages through the Mongol Empire, specifically the Yuan Dynasty. He served the emperor, Kublai Khan. He wrote an account about Chinese life so that when he returned back to Europe, the Europeans would have some kind of record of Chinese life.
This account caused Europeans to believe that China was an exotic and fascinating land, almost too wealthy and extravagant to be true.
