Beer Hall Putsch (nov 8, 1923 – nov 9, 1923)

Description:

The Beer Hall Putsch (also known as the Munich Putsch) was Hitler's failed attempt to take over the state government in Bavaria.

Causes
1. The nation's instability, caused by economic crises, a weak government and the humiliation from the Treaty of Versailles allowed for extremist parties like the Nazis to gain popularity and enough support to attempt to overthrow the government. The government had already been challenged by the left and right wing political movements and both had failed to take over. When the Nazis attempted to take the government by force, they had 50 thousand members supporting them but were still thwarted by the police and military.
2. Mussolini's 'March on Rome' had successfully established fascism in Italy in 1922. This inspired Hitler and he wanted to replicate the feat with his own 'March on Berlin' to take the national government.

Effects
1. Hitler was arrested and put on trial after the Putsch, which actually gained him and the Nazi party even more notoriety nationwide. Hitler, using his outstanding public speaking skills, delivered rousing defensive speeches which were printed in the newspaper throughout the duration of his trial. He was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment, the minimum for high treason.
2. The Putsch showed Hitler that he couldn't take the government by force without the military's support and instead, decided to take over legally through the political system.
