Leo XIII (feb 1, 1878 – jul 20, 1903)

Description:

Known for his prolific writings, particularly on social issues. He took harsh stances against the social teachings of the Enlightenment thinkers, particularly Rousseau and Voltaire. His double-edged critique of both capitalism and socialism inspired Catholic thinkers such as Belloc and Chesterton to devise the "third-way" economic theory known as "distributism".

He also did very important work in the field of Mariology to advance the doctrines of Our Lady as Coredemptrix and Mediatrix of all Grace. His encyclical "Aeterni Patris," helped revive the study of philosophy and sacred theology according to the method of the medieval scholastics.
