Minstel Shows: A National Artform (jan 1, 1830 – jan 1, 1940)
Description:
Beginning in northern states as early as 1830, Minstrel Shows employed largely white actors to dawn blackface and portray the actions of African Americans. With songs and skits, Minstrel shows mocked black culture for the pleasure of white audiences. Although is was a biased and off based representation, white people were enthralled by the way African Americans were being portrayed. In this way, minstrel shows are a great example of how black culture has been interwoven into our country's identity.
